Nurturing our inner child
The Moon is the second most powerful point in our birth chart. It is also the first place most astrologers look when they are approached by someone who claims that they are not really all that much like their Sun sign! In fact, a high percentage of people, especially those who are still quite young, may act more like their Moon's sign than that of their Sun. And this is because the Moon rules our inner child, our past, and how we react emotionally to various situations. As kids, we are far more instinctive, reactive, and ruled by the immediate needs of our bodies. As adults, we hopefully learn to filter some of these demands out, and our more rational and sensible minds take over. The Moon can make us throw a nice temper tantrum, like a toddler. This is not to say that the Moon is a negative presence in our lives. Our emotional needs are very important, and all of us have times in our lives where we need nurturance, comfort, familiarity, and care. The place our Moon resides in our birth charts is our most sensitive, vulnerable, and sacred place in need of protection and care.
In many ways, it is our mission in life for our souls to journey away from our Moon sign and begin to live more through our Sun sign. The more we leave the Moon behind as a figment of our past, the happier and more accomplished we become. But, as mentioned above, we must not forget or neglect our Moons either.
What does paying attention to our Moon look like in practice? It involves taking time to rest and recuperate from life's challenges. To journal and write down our emotional experiences of a hard day. To nurture and care for others and to allow ourselves to be cared for. To express hurt, joy, sadness, grief, love, and passion in a healthy way. Our Moons allow us to embody all of the full, rich emotional experiences of life.
As you might have guessed by now, the Moon has ties to motherhood in ways that are both spiritual and tangible. It runs on a 28-day cycle, taking almost a month to complete its journey through all twelve signs. In this way, it is the fastest-moving body through the Zodiac due to its close proximity to Earth. But this journey mirrors another cycle: female fertility. In this way, it has a very strong connection to the feminine and the process of becoming a mother.
The Moon is ruled by the sign Cancer, and its energy is best expressed in the fourth house.
