9th House

Unlike many of the other houses, finding a native of the ninth often requires searching lands far away. This house is the realm of the foreign, of that which is different and also what constitutes a sense of adventure and travel. The ninth also rules higher education, other languages and customs, philosophy and higher ideals. In this way, it is the most "high-minded" of the houses, and its natives often appear to be perpetual students of life. They also love to travel!

After the darkness and intensity of the eighth house, this is a much more pleasant, lighthearted and welcome place. A journey to the ninth house isn't really a journey into a home at all, in a sense. It is more like an adventure to lands beyond the familiar. This adventure can take a physical form, such as a visit to a foreign country, or it can be completely philosophical in nature. This may include the study of new ways of looking at life, relationships, and even the search for a purpose. A strong ninth house bestows an extremely curious nature. These people cannot be held in one place or prevented from learning new things. Sagittarius, the ruler of this house, loves adventure, and there is nothing more exciting to someone with this energy than trying new things and expanding their horizons, whatever they may be.

There is a sense of wanderlust and an inability to fully settle down with too much ninth house energy, although this is only a problem if it causes pain. Being a lifelong student allows for a range of exciting possibilities to learn and eventually to teach. If you can picture a wise older person sitting around a campfire and telling amazing tales of adventure and bestowing wisdom on those who take the time to listen, this is the purpose of the ninth; to share what they have learned with others.

In this way, we can all learn a valuable lesson from the ninth house; to broaden our horizons, expand our perspectives, and wake up to the fact that we really do not know everything. The quest for knowledge is what allows us to reap so much of the good from this life, to leave our comfortable, safe homes in the suburbs and venture into a world yet to be explored.
