Elements of a lifecycle

An Astrological house is one of twelve realms that are based on the division of twelve equal areas in the sky at the exact moment you were born. While these twelve houses are divided equally on the equatorial line, the vast majority of us were born significantly north or south of this line, and so these houses may appear to be unequal in size in a birth chart. This is similar to the effect you see when there are shorter days in one hemisphere depending on the season: the celesital bodies appear to be in certain realms for a longer or shorter time if you are further from the equator, especially as you approach the solstice of summer or winter.

The first house begins on the left side of the wheel, just below the Ascendant. These continue in order counter-clockwise around the wheel until they arrive back on the Ascendant after leaving the twelfth and final house. Each house has a ruler, which is that house's natural corresponding sign, as well as a planet that rules this sign. For example, the first house is govered by Aries and Mars is its natural ruler.
